Four Day Externships in EFT are held through the CCEFT (Chicago Center for EFT) as well as through other EFT centers throughout the U. S. and Canada. They are taught by ICEEFT (International Centre for Excellence in EFT) trainers and their colleagues. Externships are the first formal step in learning EFT and qualify participants for more advanced training.
General Objectives
Participants will:
- obtain a clear understanding of the basic experiential and systemic concepts of an “Emotionally Focused” approach to couple therapy.
- be able to conceptualize couple distress and relationship repair based on theories of attachment and emotion.
- develop skills in helping partners reprocess the emotional responses that maintain relational distress.
- develop skills in helping partners shape new interaction patterns and bonding events.
- develop skills to overcome therapeutic impasses with couples.
Externships Include:
- observation of live couple sessions.
- presentations of theory and clinical techniques.
- skills training exercises.
- discussion of specific cases, clinical material and treatment issues.
Participants learn to:
- see marital distress from an attachment perspective.
- help partners reprocess the emotional responses that maintain marital distress.
- shape new, key interaction and bonding events.
- overcome therapeutic impasses.
Who should attend?
The externship is recommended fro all professionals who counsel couples, including psychiatrists, psychologists, family physicians, social workers, psychiatric nurses, counselors, clergy and students training in these professions. Participants are strongly encouraged to read the 2004 book on EFT, Creating Connections by Sue Johnson, before coming to the externship. Ideally, participants will have also viewed the first training tape, Healing Broken Bonds.
