SUMMARY:From Protection to Connection\, presented by Marcia Vickman
DESCRIPTION:Local Learning \nFrom Protection to Connection:\nBuilding Conf
idence and Competence in Working with Defensive Clients\n\n\n\nPresenter:
 Marcia Vickman\, LCPC\, CADC\nDate: Friday\, November 6\, 2026\nTime: 10:0
 0 am – 12:00 pm CST\nLocation: Online via Zoom\n\n\n\nAbout the Workshop
\nClient defensiveness is one of the most common—and often most challeng
ing—obstacles therapists encounter in clinical practice. Defensive react
ions can leave therapists feeling stuck\, frustrated\, or unsure how to mo
ve through the rigid response to reach the client.\n\nThrough didactic ins
 truction\, role-play demonstrations\, and small-group practice\, participa
nts will leave feeling more confident and clinically competent in respondi
ng to client defensiveness. They will deepen their understanding of the at
tachment fears that drive protective responses and learn practical interve
ntions that foster safety\, emotional engagement\, and meaningful therapeu
 tic change.\nLearning Objectives\nParticipants will learn to:\n\n Deeply
connect with the attachment fears that drive defensive responses.\n Find
the pathway from protective strategies while facilitating access to underl
ying vulnerable emotions.\n Help clients transform defensive cycles into
new experiences of emotional accessibility\, responsiveness\, and connecti
on.\n\nAbout the Presenter\n\n\nMarcia Vickman began her career as a thera
pist over 35 years ago and has been working with clients ever since. In 20
11 she was introduced to Emotionally Focused Therapy. and Marcia recalls i
t felt like she hit the jackpot in her brain\, making sense of her lifelon
g attachment longings.and fears. That began her journey through Certificat
ion as an EFCT Therapist and Supervisor\, and leadership positions in Chic
agoEFT. Marcia has a private practice (rivernorththerapy.com) and works vi
