ChicagoEFT IN-PERSON Externship: June 11-14, 2025
Transform the way you work with Couples and earn 24 CE credits at this 4 day intensive training! The Emotionally Focused Couples Therapy (EFCT) Externship, developed by Dr. Susan Johnson, is an immersion into the science and power of attachment and emotion. You will learn how to shift the way you understand couples in distress and change the way you work with them. This experiential and didactic training can help you be more effective in your clinical practice as well as strengthen relationships in your own life! This is an official EFCT Externship, endorsed by the Center for Excellence in Emotionally Focused Therapy (ICEEFT).

- EFT is an experiential model, and learning EFT where you are fully present with others can help you “get” the model on a deeper level
- Each day, experienced EFCT therapists lead small group discussions and guide roleplay experiences. You’ll learn from and make friends with therapists from the Chicago EFT community.
- Reduces distractions of family, internet, TV, colleagues. An away message is your friend!
- Provides the structure of a physical learning environment that can help you actually attend and complete the training
- Conversations with instructors and other participants on breaks and over lunch furthers learning
- Develops a sense of connection with local EFT therapists which supports your growth as an EFT therapist and builds your referral network
CE CREDIT: This training qualifies for 24 continuation education credits. ChicagoEFT is licensed to offer CE’s for LMFT, LCPC, LCSW professionals and Psychologists in the state of Illinois. However, many states have reciprocity agreements and you may be able to use CE’s offered through this training. Please check with your state professional boards.
EVENT DESCRIPTION:
We will meet each day from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. CENTRAL. The training will not be streamed or recorded.
- Day 1: Research-basis, Attachment Theory, Assessment, Adapting EFT to Client Context
- Day 2: EFT Stage 1, How to Help Couples De-escalate and Stabilize Their Relationship
- Day 3: EFT Stage 2, How to Deepen Experiences of Emotional Safety
- Day 4: EFT Stage 3, Consolidating Change, also Dealing with Impasses such as Betrayals
- Each day there is time for breakout group role play and/or discussion.

Gretchen Harro, MA, LMFT is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer. Gretchen is a life-long midwesterner, and strongly identifies with her Swiss roots. Her great passions are to help couples rediscover the joy of their friendship and to help therapists become more effective and efficient in their work, which also brings her joy! Gretchen is known for her personal warmth and for adding creative elements to the training to make the learning more accessible to multiple learning styles. She owns a private practice in Buffalo Grove, IL.
Dr. Cindy Goodness Zane is a Certified Emotionally Focused Therapist, Supervisor, and Trainer. She hails from Hawai’i and strongly identifies with her Hawaiian and Japanese ancestries. She bring a relaxed tropical vibe to trainings even as she shares her passion for helping clients build secure relationships. She maintains a private practice in Hawai’i and trains therapists around the world in EFT.
